Maryfield College
Water School of the Year Regional Winner for 2019
Maryfield College has been awarded the title of Water School of the Year for 2019 for the Dublin Region by An Taisce Green Schools and Irish Water for their extensive work over the last three years on the Green Schools Theme of Water Conservation. They received their third Green Flag and trophy along with a cheque for the school amounting to €750 at a prize giving ceremony in the Raddison Blu Hotel, Golden Lane on 1st May 2019.
Pictured below are four members of the Green Schools Committee and their cooperating teachers, Michaela Castro and Mairéad Kelly McHugh from 5th Year and Martyna Baran and Abby Lowry of 2nd Year along with Ms. Brenda Parkinson (Green Schools Co-ordinator) and Ms. Rebecca Carroll (Green Schools Co-ordinator and Deputy Principal).
Some of the actions the school took as part of the programme included conducting a water audit for the school, using student and teacher surveys to measure water conservation awareness, measuring water usage and monitoring reductions in usage, holding a Water Fair as part of their Day of Action, creating water conservation themed art work for the school from plastic bottle caps, installing a water butt for use by the caretaking staff and creating a pledge wall for students to show their commitment to reducing their consumption of water and reduction of single use plastics that can end up in our oceans.
The school will now begin their work on their fourth Green Flag for Travel in September and the committee members are excited to get started.
